Some friends told us that in Galena, KS (a couple of miles from Joplin) is the "Real Mater." Today we went driving around looking for him and this is what we found...
Just in case you think that they just dressed up an old truck to look like Mater, this neon sign is hanging in the window of the building. It certainly seems to predate the movie (or they would have been more accurate!)...
That was not the only thing we saw at the old gas station that might have given the Pixar folks a spark of inspiration...
In keeping with the general feel of Radiator Springs, you would never know that this was here. It is completely un-marketed and just sitting on Rt 66, which is now a side street, in a nothing town in the farthest corner of Southeast Kansas.

That's too funny. :)
I just came by here, and had to show RJ. He loved it! Thanks so much for posting this! RJ says "I liked Mater, and Red" (Oh, yeah, did you notice that the fire truck had two flower pot-tires n front? In the movie, Red had a flower bed). RJ wants to know where Sally is... He wants to share: "I'm American made/Baught a large Chevrolet/My mama taught me wrong from right..."
That is awesome! Thanks for sharing because our 3 year old is going to LOVE this!! I know what we'll be doing this weekend.
Wednesday is great! 11:00 is good for us, maybe we could do lunch at one of our houses? I'll call early next week to set it all up.
I love your blog! Have a great weekend!
